Bamboo

Several companies have recently introduced bamboo baseball bats. Since bamboo chutes are hollow, unlike a standard tree that a wood bat is made of, bamboo bats are made by pressing bamboo "strips" into billets, and then turning these billets into bats. Bamboo is an extremely strong wood, with a tensile strength greater than that of steel. Brett Brothers uses a bamboo core and maple for its most popular bats.
(Brett Bats )

Hickory

In the early days of baseball, hickory bats were very common choice of some of the games early hitters.. Hickory is an extremely hard and strong piece of wood, (
MacDougall Solid Wood uses a Hickory Handle and a teak like wood for the barrel) although with the strength comes a lot of weight. Hickory baseball bats weigh too much for many ball players.  Thus batters have less bat speed

Maple

Maple baseball bats have recently become popular. For years, maple was too heavy to make an effective bat. Recent technology in drying wood has created bats with lower moisture content, which are light enough to make effective baseball bats. (
Sandlot Stiks) Rock or Sugar Maple bats are preferred. Maple bats cost more than white ash, but they often last longer as a result of their high strength. Check for the ink...More

More information can be found at woodbat.org  HERE for a PDF document that discusses much of what you see in this site,
plus an explanation of all the changes that have taken place for MLB Bat Rules in 2009.

White Ash

The majority of wood baseball bats today are made from northern white ash harvested from Pennsylvania or New York. White ash is used because of it's hardness, durability, strength, weight and "feel". Trees that provide the lumber for baseball bats are often 50 years old, and of all the lumber harvested - the top 10% is saved for pro bats. (

Composite Wood Bats

Composite wood baseball bat materials (fiber glass, carbon, and Kevlar fibers embedded in a plastic resin) they are stronger, stiffer and last longer. Some have a wood outer core with a wood resin core, others have laminated strips like plywood , and again others have a wood barrel with a plastic or metal handle.

Be a Better Hitter

When using a wood bat you need to practice hitting with good mechanics by hitting off a tee or our
Popper-Upper into a net using PowerWiffsTM or other plastic baseballs and you'll notice right away spending an hour a day will build up bat speed and help your hand eye coordination.. Wood bats have a different sweet spot and the barrel diameter tends to be smaller but with proper contact the ball will pop and jump off the bat on a solid hit ball.  Some bats (Sandlot Stiks) even create better back spin.

BAT-BALL COEFFICIENT OF RESTITUTION: BBCOR.50 The bat performance test measures the bat and ball speeds before and after impact in a controlled laboratory setting. A mandatory silk-screen or other permanent certification mark must be clearly displayed on the barrel end of the bat. The barrel diameter will be no greater than 2.625 in. Test methods will continue to be studied and developed that help ensure fun and fair competition, while maintaining the integrity of the game.
